What to Pack & Wear for Alanya (by Season)

Packing for Alanya is mostly about sun, sea and the season you're travelling in. In high summer you'll live in light clothes and swimwear; in the shoulder months and winter, you'll want layers for cooler evenings. Whatever the month, strong sun protection is non-negotiable. Here's a season-by-season packing guide plus the essentials people most often forget.

🧳 What-to-Pack Helper — coming soon
Pick your travel month and we'll show you the typical weather, sea temperature and a tailored packing list. For now, the season-by-season guide below has you covered.

Summer (June–September): beach mode

Hot days (up to ~33°C) and warm seas — pack light:

  • Light, breathable clothing — cotton/linen, shorts, dresses, T-shirts.
  • Swimwear (two sets so one's always dry) and a beach cover-up.
  • Strong sun protection — high-SPF cream, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses. The sun is intense; see staying safe in the Alanya sun.
  • Sandals/flip-flops plus comfy shoes for walking and sightseeing.
  • Insect repellent for the evenings — see mosquitoes & bites.
  • A light layer for over-air-conditioned restaurants is occasionally handy.

Shoulder seasons (April–May & September–October): layers

Warm days (low-to-mid 20s) but cooler evenings (around 15–16°C). Pack as for summer, then add:

  • A light jacket, cardigan or long sleeves for the evenings.
  • Trousers or longer skirts as an evening option.
  • A small umbrella or light waterproof — slightly higher chance of a shower, especially October. See Alanya in October.
  • Swimwear still essential — the sea's lovely well into October.

Winter (November–March): mild but bring layers

Mild days (~15–18°C) but the wettest, coolest part of the year:

  • Warmer layers — jumpers, a proper jacket for evenings.
  • A waterproof and an umbrella — this is the rainy stretch.
  • Comfortable walking shoes — winter's great for sightseeing.
  • Swimwear if you're hardy (the sea's cool at ~17–20°C, but the pools may be heated).

What to wear: the dress code

In the resorts and tourist areas, normal beach and summer wear is completely standard — dress as you would at any Mediterranean resort. Two things worth knowing:

  • Mosques & local/rural areas: cover shoulders and knees as a respectful courtesy. A light scarf is handy for women visiting a mosque.
  • Evenings out: smart-casual is fine for most restaurants and bars; you don't need to dress up.

Year-round essentials (don't forget these)

  • High-SPF sun cream & after-sun — the most-forgotten and most-needed item.
  • Hat & sunglasses.
  • Any regular medication — enough for the trip plus spare, in its original packaging (see pharmacies in Alanya).
  • A refillable water bottle — stay hydrated; stick to bottled water for drinking.
  • Travel adapter — Turkey uses the European two-pin plug, so UK visitors need an adapter.
  • Travel documents & insurance details — and remember your travel insurance matters (your GHIC won't cover Turkey).
  • A bit of lira for arrival — see how much cash to take.

What you don't need to overpack

You can buy sun cream, toiletries, beach toys, water and most bits cheaply once you're there, so don't stuff your case — leave room for what you'll inevitably bring back. The market and local shops have most things you'll forget.
