Staying Connected in Turkey: SIM, eSIM & Wifi

Staying online in Turkey is easy and cheap if you plan ahead — but there's one rule that catches people out, so read this before you fly. In short: for most UK visitors an eSIM is the simplest and cheapest option, and you should set it up before you leave the UK. Coverage in Alanya is excellent (fast 4G and 5G), so once you're sorted you'll have no trouble with maps, messaging, ride apps or sharing your holiday photos.

The eSIM rule you must know

This is the catch: buy and activate your eSIM before you arrive in Turkey. Some eSIM provider apps and websites are blocked inside the country, which means if you wait until you land to set one up, you may not be able to. eSIMs themselves work perfectly well in Turkey — the trick is simply to get it installed and activated while you're still in the UK (on your home wifi). Do that and it'll connect automatically when you arrive. Sorted in advance, it's the easiest option going.

eSIM vs SIM card vs roaming

  • eSIM (best for most): digital, no physical card, buy online before you fly, activate by scanning a QR code. Cheapest and easiest — needs an eSIM-compatible phone (most recent iPhones and Androids). Just set it up before arrival.
  • Physical tourist SIM: works fine, but costs more (airport prices are highest), needs your passport to register, and means swapping out your home SIM. Buy in a city store rather than the airport for better value.
  • UK SIM roaming: only worth it if your plan specifically includes Turkey — otherwise roaming charges can be eye-watering. Check with your provider before you go; many UK plans don't include Turkey.

Coverage in Alanya

You'll be well connected. Alanya and the resort areas around Türkler, Konaklı and Avsallar have excellent mobile coverage, with widespread fast 4G and 5G. Maps, WhatsApp, social media, ride and taxi apps and streaming all work smoothly in the tourist areas. Only in remote mountain or rural spots might you see slower speeds — not an issue for a normal beach holiday.

What about wifi?

Most hotels, many cafés and restaurants offer free wifi, which is fine for casual browsing back at base. But don't rely on it as you go — public wifi can be slow or patchy, and you'll want your own data for maps, taxi apps and messaging when you're out and about. Wifi is a nice extra; mobile data is what actually keeps you sorted day to day.

How much data do you need?

For a typical holiday — maps, messaging, social media, the odd video — a modest data package goes a long way, and you can usually top up if you run low. If you'll be streaming or working, get a larger or unlimited plan. eSIM plans are flexible and often cheap for short stays, so you can match it to your trip length.

One thing to ignore

You may read about IMEI phone registration in Turkey. This only matters if you stay longer than 120 days and want to keep using a Turkish SIM — it does not affect a normal 1–3 week holiday. You can safely ignore it as a tourist.

Quick setup checklist

  • ✅ Choose an eSIM (or plan to buy a SIM in a city store, not the airport)
  • ✅ Check your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked
  • ✅ Buy & activate the eSIM before you leave the UK
  • ✅ Check whether your UK plan includes Turkey (to avoid roaming)
  • ✅ Save offline maps of Alanya as a backup

Frequently asked questions

Yes, but buy and activate it before you arrive. Some eSIM apps and sites are blocked inside Turkey, so set it up while still in the UK and it'll work fine on arrival.

Is there good mobile coverage in Alanya?
Yes — excellent, with widespread fast 4G and 5G. No trouble with maps, messaging or streaming in the tourist areas.

Should I just use my UK SIM?
