What to Buy in Alanya: Souvenirs & the Best Buys

Coming to Alanya with an empty bit of suitcase to fill? Good plan. Alanya is brilliant for souvenirs and genuinely good-value buys — some things here are far cheaper or more special than back home. Here's what's actually worth buying, from buttery Turkish leather to spices, sweets and jewellery, plus honest tips on quality so you bring home treasures rather than tat.

The best-value buys

Turkish leather

Turkey is one of the world's big leather producers, so genuine leather jackets, bags, wallets and belts can be superb value compared with UK prices. This is one of the things most worth buying here. The key is quality: buy from a reputable shop, check the stitching, lining and that natural leather smell, and be cautious of suspiciously cheap "leather" that may be imitation. One of the best-known leather specialists in the area is Ponto MK Leather, worth a look if you want the real thing.

Spices & tea

Vibrant, cheap and easy to pack: paprika, sumac, chilli, dried mint, saffron, plus Turkish tea (çay) and ground Turkish coffee. The spice shops and markets are a feast for the senses, and a bag of spices makes a brilliant, lightweight gift.

The classic souvenirs

  • Turkish delight (lokum) — the iconic edible gift, in dozens of flavours; try before you buy where you can.
  • Baklava & sweets — buy sealed boxes for travelling home.
  • Evil-eye (nazar) charms — the blue-eye amulet, on everything from keyrings to jewellery; cheap, cheerful and very Turkish.
  • Ceramics & tiles — colourful bowls, plates and decorative pieces.
  • Turkish carpets & kilims — beautiful, but a bigger purchase; only buy if you know what you're looking at, and haggle hard.
  • Cosmetics — olive oil, pomegranate and goat-milk soaps and creams.

Gold, silver & jewellery

Turkey has a strong tradition of gold and silver, and jewellery can be good value — but buy from established shops, ask about purity (carat), and remember gold is sold by weight at the day's rate. It's a lovely keepsake, just shop with a bit of care for bigger purchases.

What about "designer" bargains?

You'll see a lot of replica designer goods ("genuine fakes") in the tourist bazaars — handbags, trainers, sportswear. They're cheap and popular, but they're copies, not the real thing, and there are rules about bringing them into the UK. We cover this honestly in fake goods & "genuine fakes" so you can decide for yourself.
